Read frequently asked questions before purchasing an electric scooter (FAQ)

There are already numerous brands and types of electric scooters on the market for different purposes, so it is necessary to consider what kind of scooter you need for yourself. Does it make sense to buy an electric scooter with a large battery and a more powerful motor?

To make it easier to purchase an electric scooter, especially the first one, please read the following points:

1.) The power of the electric scooter is very important if you are heavier or, for example, wearing a backpack while riding. In this case, the electric scooter will have a smaller range, a lower top speed, and will be harder to ride uphill. The weight of the rider is therefore a crucial element to consider when purchasing. Less powerful scooters with nominal power ranging from 250W to 500W will not be able to handle smaller inclines with a heavier rider.

2.) Note that in practice, the final speed, range, and slope climbing may differ from the data provided by the seller and manufacturer. This happens because the manufacturer conducts tests in better or perfect conditions (weight, temperature, speed, charge level, wind resistance, road surface type, slope degree) to indicate the range, speed, and slope climbing.

3.) For safe driving and long life of the electric scooter, consider the load carrying capacity limits. The manufacturer does not guarantee that the scooter will work if you exceed the limits and is not responsible for any damage that may occur as a result of such behaviour.

4.) An electric scooter equipped with “Honeycomb” or solid tires requires very little maintenance compared to air-filled tires and is suitable for those who want less maintenance and costs. But riding with solid or “Honeycomb” tires is harder and less comfortable.

5.) Most electric scooters can be easily stored in the trunk of a car or taken on a train, so check the dimensions and weight of the product before purchasing.

6.) Check the availability of spare parts and accessories. With the flood of new brands of electric scooters, spare parts may not always be available or may require a long wait.

7.) When deciding which electric scooter to choose, user reviews, scooter tests, and videos can be helpful.

8.) Proper use and storage of the electric scooter battery are very important for its longevity. Please use and store the battery according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before riding, it is important to familiarize yourself with the scooter and its operation. We advise starting with larger, empty outdoor areas. Learn how to use the accelerator lever, brakes, lights, and other scooter components. If you want to start slowly, you can try the scooter as a traditional scooter without the electric drive. This will help you gain a sense of balance, steering, and braking.

When choosing an electric scooter, motor power is expressed in watts (W), battery voltage and capacity expressed in amperes (Ah) or watt-hours (Wh), and voltage in volts (V) are important factors to consider.

Most electric scooters are powered by a brushless motor. The motor power is expressed in watts (W) and can range from 250 watts to several thousand watts. It is also important to distinguish between the constant or nominal power of the motor and the maximum power of the motor. The constant or nominal power is available throughout the motor’s operation, while the maximum power is only available for a short time, ranging from a few seconds to about a minute, after which the motor requires a cooling phase and operates at constant power. The cooling phase is approximately the same length as the acceleration phase with maximum power. The final speed and hill-climbing ability of the scooter are mainly dependent on the motor.

The power of an electric scooter is also important for uphill driving and achieving higher speeds. If you ride on flat terrain, less powerful electric scooters are sufficient. For climbing hills, it is recommended to use an electric scooter with a more powerful motor. These scooters will climb hills more easily and quickly. Electric scooters with 250 W and 350 W motors are suitable for flat terrain, and such a scooter will barely be able to drive uphill or may even stop, especially for heavier riders.

By determining the intended use and terrain, you can easily choose the motor power. Electric scooters with 300 to 500 watt motors are designed for everyday, non-demanding driving, especially on flat terrain. 500 to 1000 watt electric scooters are designed for more demanding users who tackle steeper hills. Electric scooters with 1000 watts or more are designed for the most demanding users who want high speeds and off-road driving.

When choosing the motor power, consider the weight of the rider and the terrain on which you will be riding. When buying an electric scooter, pay attention to the constant (also known as nominal or nominal) power and maximum power of the motor. Maximum power means that the power can be increased in very short intervals (a few seconds), but this does not help us in the case of longer climbs. Therefore, when buying an electric scooter for hill-climbing, focus on the constant power of the motor instead.

We often come across questions like “which electric scooter is the most powerful?” or “which electric scooter is the fastest?” The answer is usually an electric scooter with two motors, each mounted on its own wheel. These scooters typically have greater power, better acceleration, higher top speeds, and better hill-climbing ability. They can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h or more and climb hills up to 50°.

The performance of a scooter is influenced by the weight of the rider, weight of the scooter, wind resistance, incline, terrain on which you are riding, tire type and size, battery charge level, and battery voltage.

It all depends on what range you need; a larger capacity simply means longer operation or a greater range for an electric scooter. In our offer, we have scooters that have the potential to reach up to 100 km, for example the Joyor Y10. The issue of estimating the range of an electric scooter remains because there is no uniform standard for range estimation. Most manufacturers estimate range in excellent conditions with a rider weight of around 70 kg, on level ground, with the ECO mode engaged. This leads to discrepancies between the actual expectations of customers and the manufacturer’s stated range for the electric scooter. In most cases, or very loosely, we dare to say that the “real” range of an electric scooter is 20% – 30% less than the range stated by the manufacturer.

Please use a calculator to calculate the range of an electric scooter:

Click for an electric scooter range calculator.

You can simply improve the range of the scooter by following the tips below: Always start with a kick push, the motor consumes the most energy when it develops the most torque, which is during acceleration from standstill. Accelerate slowly, faster acceleration means more torque and greater energy consumption. Lower the top speed, higher speed brings more wind resistance. Maintaining a higher speed requires more torque and consequently more energy. Properly inflate the tires.

Make sure that the tires are inflated to the recommended pressure, which will reduce rolling resistance. Low pressure reduces range and increases the risk of punctures. Drive in warm weather if possible. The battery performance significantly decreases at temperatures below 20°C.

Many future electric scooter drivers are interested in knowing what slope or hill an electric scooter can handle. First, it is necessary to answer how manufacturers measure the slope angle of electric scooters. Since there is no standard that is defined or uniform, each manufacturer measures or tests in their own way. Most electric scooter manufacturers measure in such a way that the weight of the driver is approximately 70 kg and with a full lithium battery, which ensures maximum power to the motor. Therefore, in some cases, especially with electric scooters with less power (250 W & 350 W), claims that they can handle a 15-degree slope (hill) should be taken with reserve. The slope angle also strongly depends on the user, mainly due to their weight. If you need a scooter to tackle steeper slopes and hills, we recommend more powerful scooters and especially scooters with two motors.

In our offer, there are extremely good electric scooters with two motors for tackling steeper slopes.

When the scooter is in regular use, avoid draining the battery below 10%. If this happens, immediately charge the battery. Do not leave the battery on the charger longer than necessary, and do not charge it in direct sunlight. During longer periods of scooter inactivity (e.g., storing over winter), it is important to charge the battery at least once every 30 days. We recommend that during this time, you maintain the battery charge between 50% and 80% and store the electric scooter at room temperatures.

You must not leave lithium batteries completely discharged or fully charged as this can cause battery damage and reduce capacity. By following the manufacturer’s instructions, you will ensure maximum battery life and proper operation.
Always use the original charger to charge the electric scooter.

Which electric scooter can be registered – EEC label?

Any electric scooter with an EEC label can be registered. Scooters with an EEC label come with a certificate of vehicle compliance (COC – Certificate of conformity). Based on the COC certificate, a homologation inspection of the vehicle can be initiated and a homologation card, which is required for vehicle registration, can be obtained.

What is the process for registering an electric scooter?

First, the homologation process is carried out, and then our company arranges the payment of the DMV (motor vehicle tax). Finally, insurance is arranged and the vehicle is registered. Because it is a new vehicle, you are exempt from the technical inspection for the first four years.

What is the cost of registering an electric scooter?

In the registration process, you will encounter the following costs (costs as of October 17, 2022):

• Homologation: €97.60
• Motor vehicle tax (DMV): €0
• Technical inspection (no inspection required for new vehicles up to five years): €0
• Insurance: starting from €15
• Vehicle registration and license plate (first year): €32.16
• Renewal of registration without license plate (subsequent years): €10.90

What category of vehicles do registered electric scooters belong to?

Registered electric scooters belong to the L1e-B vehicle category (two-wheeled mopeds). Vehicles in this category are characterized by a maximum speed not exceeding 45 km/h and a maximum (continuous, nominal) power not exceeding 4000 W.

Most electric scooters have a speed limit controlled by a controller that regulates the flow of energy from the battery to the motor. Most speed limiters can be easily removed, but be aware that it is not permitted to ride an electric scooter without homologation at speeds exceeding 25 km/h or at a speed adjusted to that of pedestrians.

Electric scooters belong to the group of lightweight motor vehicles. According to our traffic regulations, they are not permitted to exceed a speed of 25 km/h. Speed must always be adjusted to passers-by. When riding, use the bicycle lane. If there is no bicycle lane, riding is only allowed on the right-hand side of the carriageway in settlements where the speed limit is 50 km/h. Riding on the sidewalk and outside settlements is prohibited with an electric scooter.

The fine for riding on the sidewalk is 40 €. In pedestrian areas, the speed of the scooter must be adjusted to the speed of pedestrians and cannot exceed 10 km/h. For driving in traffic, an electric scooter must be equipped with a white light on the front and a red light on the back. The use of headphones and mobile phones while driving is prohibited. The fine is 120 €. In addition to the police, municipal wardens have the authority to monitor electric scooter drivers.

Riding an electric scooter is easier than riding a bike and most people can start right away. Wear protective clothing suitable for your journey and riding style. Before you get on an electric scooter, make sure you’re dressed appropriately.
Always wear a helmet, no matter how short the trip or how fast you’re going. The helmet should have at least a CPSC certification to properly protect your head.

Your clothing and gear should be adjusted to the speed and type of travel you’re doing. Higher speeds require more protective gear.

For higher speeds or if you’re riding in traffic, you’ll want to wear pants with long socks, gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, and shoes that protect your entire foot.

You can also add more protective gear, including knee pads or even a full racing suit.

Before riding, it’s important to familiarize yourself with your electric scooter. Check where the accelerator, brakes, lights, and horn are located. This will help you ride safely and efficiently on your electric scooter.

If you’ve just received an electric scooter, it’s best to take it to a secure area outside of traffic, such as a parking lot. Test the acceleration and braking of the electric scooter to get a feel for the ride.

We recommend testing your electric scooter without turning on the electric motor by using it as a regular scooter with your feet. This will give you a good sense of balance, steering, and braking.

Test the folding mechanism of your electric scooter. Some models also have foldable handles on the handlebars. There are different mechanisms, and some have additional safety features that need to be engaged. Some mechanisms will make an audible click when properly installed, while others won’t.

Before each ride, check that your electric scooter is ready. This includes checking the brakes, throttle, lights, and mechanism.

1. Tires are in good condition and properly inflated
2. Folding mechanism is locked
3. Brakes are properly adjusted and working
4. Electric scooter is not damaged and sounds good (no strange noises, obvious damage, changes or abnormalities)

5. The battery is sufficiently charged for your trip.
6. Have a bag with equipment for longer trips.
7. A mobile phone for emergencies.

Starting and riding an electric scooter is very easy. Simply place one foot on the platform and push off while pressing the acceleration handle. Typically, you need to raise the speed to around 5 km/h to engage the motor, which is called the “kick-start” function. Some electric scooters do not require pushing off or have an adjustable option. Before starting, make sure the stand/foot is raised.

If this is your first ride on an electric scooter, you may want to use the conventional stance, where one foot (usually the non-dominant one) is in front of the other. We recommend this position because it provides greater stability and more dynamic riding. If you do it with your dominant foot, it’s called the “Goofy” stance, similar to skateboarding.
Some riders prefer to have their feet on the sides, but with this position, you will be less stable because you will not be able to properly and dynamically shift your weight to balance. In an emergency, you will not be able to react quickly enough compared to riding with one foot in front of the other.

During your electric scooter ride, use the handlebars to help balance, but let your feet and legs do most of the work. If you find yourself having to press or pull the handlebars strongly during regular riding, this is a sign that you need to introduce more leaning into your ride. At very low speeds, you will actively use the handlebars to steer the scooter, but at normal speeds, it should remain mostly level, relying on weight shifts and leaning for maneuvering and weaving. When braking hard, bend your knees and shift your weight back onto the rear foot, as if you were sitting down.

Maximum braking power is achieved just before the rear wheel slides and the brake locks. For the front wheel, it is very unlikely to slide, and there is a greater risk of being thrown over the handlebars with improper use, which is also a cause of very common electric scooter accidents.

Please take some time to practice the proper use of brakes by gradually adding more pressure to the front brake until you get used to it.

Acceleration is done by pressing the acceleration handle. If you accelerate strongly on a more powerful electric scooter, make sure your feet are in a stable position and bend your knees to lower your center of gravity. Your legs should provide most of your balance. When accelerating strongly, shift your weight onto the rear foot and use it to help the body lean forward.

This will help you not to hold onto the handlebar too tightly. If you are riding an electric scooter with two motors, it will also help the front wheel to maintain grip during acceleration.

Electric scooters can be ridden by people who are 14 years or older, or children who are over 12 years old and have a cycling license. Only one person can ride the scooter at a time. Wearing a protective helmet is mandatory for persons under 18 years of age, and recommended for all electric scooter riders.

In our offer, we have electric scooters with lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries. The lithium battery is the most commonly used battery to power an electric scooter. Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, they are lighter (by 50%-60%) and have a longer lifespan. The initial investment is higher than with a traditional lead-acid battery, but over the entire battery life cycle, this investment is much more cost-effective. A lead-acid battery has a lifespan of up to 250 charges, while a lithium battery has a lifespan of up to 1500 charges or more. Lead-acid batteries are a cheaper solution, but they have a much shorter lifespan and are quite heavy and large.

We definitely recommend purchasing lithium batteries for the SXT Monster, SXT 1000, SXT 1600 Xl, and SXT 500 models, where there is an option to choose a lead-acid battery.

The weight capacity is the weight limit that an electric scooter can carry. For most electric scooters, this limit ranges from 100 kg to 120 kg. If you weigh more, make sure the electric scooter can handle your weight. For safety reasons, you should not exceed the weight limit set by the manufacturer. In our offer, we have electric scooters that have a weight capacity of up to 150 kg. These include the SXT Monster electric scooter with a weight capacity of 140 kg and the SXT Monster EEC electric scooter with registration and a weight capacity of 136 kg. If you are at the top of the weight limit, your electric scooter will be slower and will have a shorter range compared to a lighter rider. Also, consider whether you will be carrying a backpack or anything else that could contribute to your weight. For riders who weigh close to or over 100 kg, we recommend at least a 500 W motor even for flat terrain.

What brakes do electric scooters have? A high-quality braking system is essential for safety and control while riding an electric scooter. Electric scooter brakes can be divided into two categories: mechanical and electronic.
Mechanical braking systems rely on a physical mechanism to slow down the scooter and include foot, drum, and disc brakes. The energy from the brake lever to the actual brake can be transmitted in two ways: through brake fluid (hydraulic brakes) or through a cable (mechanical brakes).

The typical braking distance at 24 km/h for mechanical systems is six meters, and the absolute best is less than three meters. Foot brakes, which are activated by pressing down on the rear fender, cause friction and slow down the scooter. This type of brake is not as effective as drum or disc brakes.

Drum brakes are enclosed in the wheel and require less maintenance than other types of brakes; they also perform well in wet conditions. Disc brakes have the highest braking power and are lighter than drum brakes. They are usually found on higher-end scooters and high-performance electric scooters.

Electronic braking systems rely on the use of the motor itself for braking and include exclusively electric and regenerative braking systems. Electric and regenerative brakes are the weakest.

Mechanical brakes provide stronger braking than electronic systems. However, electronic systems do not require any adjustments or maintenance. Many electric scooters will have a combination of electronic and mechanical braking systems.
Many electric scooters have a built-in kinetic energy recovery system (KERS). The system works by storing the energy released during braking. You can then use this energy for acceleration, which will also extend the life of your brake pads.

Good tires and suspension mean good handling and a comfortable ride on an electric scooter.

A larger tire means better handling and a better feel while driving, while also making it easier to overcome bumps on the road. A solid tire is made entirely of rubber and lacks suspension. An electric scooter with solid tires is quite rigid or stiff to ride. The advantage of a solid tire is its longer lifespan and the fact that it cannot be punctured, making maintenance of the scooter itself easier and cheaper.

“Honeycomb” tires are a popular solution among scooter drivers as they combine the comfort of a traditional tire with easier maintenance of an electric scooter, although they are not quite as comfortable as a regular tire.

A traditional tire is the most popular among electric scooter drivers because it is extremely comfortable, although such a scooter needs to be maintained more frequently and its tire pressure monitored.

In general, an electric scooter is very simple to maintain. The most common maintenance task is to replace tires and inner tubes, and to ensure that the correct tire pressure is maintained. We advise that you regularly inspect your electric scooter, as it can happen that a screw or electrical wiring may become loose during use.

Most users will experience one issue with their scooter for every 1000 kilometers ridden. The most common issues are a punctured or worn tire, worn or improperly adjusted brakes, and broken or loose fenders.

Another extremely important aspect is proper battery maintenance. Every manufacturer has their own instructions on how to best use a lithium battery. For optimal battery life, it is very important to read the instructions for use before first use and to follow the manufacturer’s advice. Improper battery maintenance is excluded from the electric scooter warranty.

We advise that you thoroughly inspect all important parts of the scooter (brakes, tires, screws, etc.) before each use.

Regardless of laws and regulations, we always advise wearing a helmet and other protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads, back protectors) while riding an electric scooter. For higher-speed riding, we also recommend wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, gloves, and closed-toe shoes.

On stronger scooters, the risk of falling is higher, which can endanger yourself and other traffic participants. Your equipment and clothing must always match the speed and style of driving. Higher speed means more protective equipment.

Due to the small wheels, electric scooters are subject to a lot of vibrations transferred to the driver. The transmission is even more intense on scooters with solid tires. To ensure a comfortable ride, all scooters in our offer (except for Xiaomi electric scooters) have installed suspension.

Suspension can be single or double. There are three main types of suspension on electric scooters. These are classic spring dampers, piston hydraulic or air suspension, and suspension with the help of rubber.

All electric scooters in our offer are equipped with LED lighting. There is a white/yellow light on the front of the scooter and a red LED light is installed on the back of the scooter. Many scooters also have a light sensor that automatically turns on the lights in low daylight. As an additional feature, some scooters also offer side ambient lighting, which can be turned off if desired. In recent times, electric scooters with built-in turn signals are becoming increasingly common. In our offer, these are, for example, SXT Monster EEC, Joyor Y10 or Joyor S5 and others.

It always applies that each electric scooter with a seat is interpreted as a moped and falls under the legal provisions for mopeds, although it is not actually the case. Electric scooters with a seat are not specifically regulated in our legislation, so the regulations for mopeds apply to them. Many smaller electric scooters with a seat are involved in daily traffic. Most of these electric scooters move between 350 W – 500 W with a final speed of up to 25 km/h. An electric scooter with a seat that can be homologated (EEC). Such a scooter with a seat can be driven in traffic because it can be registered and properly insured.

In our offer, we have electric scooters with a seat and an EEC certificate that can be registered and insured anywhere in the EU.

Most electric scooters come equipped with anti-theft protection. You can unlock/lock the scooter using a mobile application, a traditional key, a contactless (NFC) key, an immobilizer, or a PIN code. You can also install an alarm system on the scooter. Because most electric scooters weigh up to 40 kilograms, they are easy to steal without physical locking. An electric scooter can be quickly placed in the trunk of a car or used as a traditional non-motorized scooter.

To choose the right size of lock, you will need to examine your scooter and determine secure locking points. These are points that are made of hard material that cannot be easily unscrewed or broken. We recommend using high-quality locks, especially hard U-shaped locks. Choose a size that fits around (or through) the scooter and still leaves enough room to reach a fixed point (pole, bike rack, etc.).

The best secure points on your scooter are:
• Handlebar stem
• Folding mechanism
• Carry handle
• Rear footrest Points to avoid when locking:
• Wheels, as they can be quickly removed
• Handlebars
• Weak and removable points such as fenders and attached accessories

We advise you to always lock your electric scooter when leaving it unattended. Do this in a well-lit and visible location, such as a bike rack in front of an entrance. Secure the scooter in a way that does not disturb or obstruct passersby. There is a lower likelihood of the scooter being stolen in a shopping center with cameras than in a deserted parking lot, where a thief can take more time. Also, make sure your scooter is protected from weather conditions such as rain and direct sunlight.

Proper cleaning is one of the most important elements of good electric scooter maintenance. Regular cleaning is necessary if you want your scooter to have a long lifespan. It is essential to clean the chassis and fenders more frequently to remove dirt or extra dust.

To clean, use a damp cloth or soft sponge and make sure the charging port is closed (covered). Never use corrosive substances or chemical cleaners as they can damage your electric scooter. Do not use running water or even a pressure washer for cleaning. You can use a used toothbrush to help. After each cleaning, completely dry the scooter.

Before long-term storage, it is recommended that you thoroughly clean your scooter. When the scooter is completely dry, we recommend storing it with a cover so that the scooter remains clean until the next use.

The IP label is an abbreviation for the English phrase “ingress protection” (protection against ingress). It tells us how an electric scooter is protected against the intrusion of dust and water into its interior. In addition to the IP label, there are two digits (e.g. IP54), and the higher the number, the greater the protection of the scooter. The first digit tells us what the protection against dust is, and the second digit tells us what the protection against water is. If you want to use an electric scooter in all weather conditions (even in the rain), the second digit must be higher or equal to 4 (IPx4).

IPx0
• Completely unprotected against water IPx1 to IPx3
• Very limited protection against water IPx4 to IPx6
• Suitable for driving in the rain IPx7 and higher
• Can be fully submerged in water

To choose the size of the helmet, you need to measure the circumference of the head. The easiest way to do this is with a tape measure.
1. Take a tape measure (if you don’t have one, take a non-elastic string and then measure the length with a ruler or construction tape measure).
2. Wrap the tape measure or string around your head, just above the ears and eyebrows.
Helmet sizes are usually marked with labels S, M, L, XL, where each label represents a certain circumference.

• XS (52-54 cm)
• S (54-56 cm)
• M (56-58 cm)
• L (58-60 cm)

Ker večina električnih skirojev tehta do 40 kilogramov, jih brez fizičnega zaklepanja ni težko odtujiti.

  • Šibke in odstranljive točke kot so blatniki in pritrjeni dodatki

IPx0

  • Popolnoma brez zaščite proti vodi

IPx1 do IPx3

  • Zelo omejena zaščita proti vodi

IPx4 do IPx6

  • Primerno za vožnjo po dežju

IPx7 in več

Najlažje boste to storili s šiviljskim metrom.

  2. Meter ali vrvico ovijte okoli glave, tik nad ušesi in nad obrvmi.

Velikosti čelade so po navadi označene z oznakami S, M, L, XL, kjer vsaka oznaka predstavlja določen obseg.

  • XS (52-54 cm)
  • S (54-56 cm)
  • M (56-58 cm)
  • L (58-60 cm))
